about the river

The rapids of the Slave River cross the Alberta N.W.T. border, stretching a 25km length between Fort Fitzgerald, AB and Fort Smith, NWT.

There are four main drops that make up the rapids. The First is Cassette Rapids. The second is the deadly Pelican Rapids. The third is the popular Mountain Portage Rapids. And the last set which are visible from town are Rapids Of The Drowned.

The water of the Slave comes from the Peace and Athabasca rivers and because it takes so long to get to the rapids it is very warm water.  The river is also very wide up to 3km across and can get over a hundred feet deep in spots. The river has a variety of rapids from thousands of holes and giant surf waves to high volume creeks and extreme drops.  The river has also been home to many whitewater slalom races as well.  The Nationals were held here in 1994 and the Territorials have been held here for many years.

The river also has lots of fun those people who don't kayak. For people who want something less exciting there is always the hike out to Pelican Rapids and picking berries  at Mountain Portage.
